The
Middle School provides challenging opportunities for students in
grades five to eight to enhance their understanding of themselves
and the society in which they live through a hands-on program that
promotes curiosity, exploratory learning and problem-solving, and
is attentive to the growth and needs of early adolescents. Critical
thinking skills are integrated into a program that balances direct
skill teaching and active student participation, utilizing the principles
of student as learner and teacher as coach with an overall goal
of encouraging our students to be life long learners.
Teachers work together as two teaching teams for 5th-6th grades
and 7th-8th grades within the Middle School Division, to facilitate
inter-disciplinary projects and collaborative teaching and learning
with individual attention.
Middle
School teachers, who serve as grade level advisors, work as a team
to meet the needs of the students and provide a smooth transition
from self-contained classes in Lower School to the challenges of
new logistics and departmentalization. These new demands require
applying a new set of organizational skills and strategies which
are taught throughout the school program. This
grounding in solid academic practices helps students take intellectual
risks, develop as learners and solidify their confidence.
The social curriculum promotes the development of self-discipline,
respect and responsibility through the advisory program, leadership
opportunities, life skills and service learning. Extracurricular
activities develop student strengths in leadership, athletics and
the arts.
